What does it mean to be a nature school?
A nature preschool is more than school with extra recess—it’s an early childhood program where the outdoors is the classroom. Children spend much of their day immersed in meadows, gardens, and wooded play areas, where every stick, stone, and stream becomes part of the lesson.
Here, teachers harness the natural world to ignite curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving, guiding children as they investigate, imagine, and discover. This nature-based approach fuels the whole child—building physical strength, social confidence, emotional resilience, and cognitive growth.

What type of food is served and can you accomodate my child's allergies or preferences?
At Havenwood, every meal is thoughtfully prepared from scratch with a focus on wholesome, balanced nutrition. Children enjoy dishes built around hearty whole grains, lean proteins, and an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables. This daily exposure to real, nourishing food not only fuels their growth and learning but also helps them naturally prefer balanced meals over processed snacks.
Because everything is made in-house, our kitchen has the flexibility to accommodate allergies and preferences—ensuring every child feels included, cared for, and well-nourished.
Will my child be ready for kindergarten and is there structure inside the rooms?
Absolutely! One of the biggest misconceptions about nature schools is that children are “just playing outside” and not really learning. The truth is the exact opposite.
At Havenwood, outdoor exploration is seamlessly woven together with core academics. Every day, children practice problem-solving, observation, and critical thinking through hands-on experiences in nature.

What curriculum do you use and how is it implemented?
One of the things that sets Havenwood apart is the way we approach curriculum. Instead of relying on a stock binder or off-the-shelf program, our teachers design their own lesson plans each week in collaboration with our curriculum coordinators. Lessons are inspired by what excites the children in the moment, then curated into age-appropriate provocations, activities, and projects.
This keeps learners engaged, curious, and eager to explore.
Because we hire passionate, creative educators, we trust them to recognize where children are developmentally and what skills they’re ready to build next. This approach gives us the ultimate flexibility to meet children exactly where they are while keeping learning joyful and relevant.
For our youngest learners (under two), we use the Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP) to guide growth across domains like cognition, language, literacy, math, social-emotional, and physical development.
For children two and older, we align with Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) to ensure every child leaves Havenwood at or above grade level—confident, capable, and prepared for what comes next.
